RORY FRIERS

Rory Friers is a composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, best known for his film scores, spatial sound compositions, and his work as a songwriter and guitarist in the award-winning experimental rock band And So I Watch You From Afar.

Rory’s work blends tradition with experimentation, creating urgent and emotionally resonant music. His distinctive guitar, warm electronica and intricate string arrangements have been featured in a diverse range of projects, in film, television, video games, sound installations, and immersive live experiences. Over the course of his career, Rory has contributed to critically acclaimed releases on legendary labels such as Lakeshore Records, Equal Vision, Sargent House, and Xtal (Japan).

In 2024 Rory was commissioned to make his first two compositions for a full orchestra. ‘In Search of a Clearing’ was performed live on BBC television with the Ulster Orchestra at the Waterfront Hall. ‘When The Westlink Goes’ was performed at a concert in Townsend Street as part of Belfast 24 to celebrate the new permanent home of the orchestra.

In addition to his film work, Rory has established himself as an immersive artist working on a string of critically acclaimed commissions, collaborations and projects all rooted in spatial sound. In 2024 he worked on several of these projects; the interactive AI installation ‘Holonic Fields’, Helen Halls surround sound dance piece ‘Touch, Hear, Feel’, a spatial concert and VR experience at Mussenden Temple, recorded at two sold-out shows on the North Coast of Antrim, in partnership with the National Trust, Stunt Double Music and a collaboration with Melbourne-based digital artist Nate Hill to create the NFT project ‘Symphonies of Reality’, which premiered at Dubai's world-renowned Art In Space Gallery.

In 2023, he collaborated with award-winning director Ross McClean to produce HOME, a sound and video work commissioned by UNBOXED / Our Place in Space and produced by Dumbworld. In February 2023, Rory debuted his live Dolby Surround concert All Around Us at SARC as part of the Northern Ireland Science Festival, the first performance of its kind in the country. This groundbreaking show featured his ensemble of frequent collaborators, Michael Keeney and the Arco Quartet, and marked the beginning of a series of immersive concerts in extraordinary locations. His sound and film installation All Together; All Alone enjoyed had a month-long residency at Belfast’s W5 Science Museum in 2022. He created Jettison (2019), a 50-minute live audiovisual composition for eight musicians and string quartet, with an accompanying visual world created in Unreal Game Engine by artist Sam Wiehl (Mogwai, Actress). The work premiered at a sold-out Queen Elizabeth Hall at London’s Southbank Centre to critical acclaim.

Rory grew up on the rugged North Antrim coastline in Northern Ireland, where his love for music was sparked by his father’s extensive 70s prog rock record collection and the many instruments that filled their family home. He now resides in East Belfast with his wife Rachel, working from his home studio.
</image:caption>

‘HOME’, RORY FRIERS’ DEBUT EP, NOW AVAILABLE
21 OCT 2025

RORY: “It all started with a handheld recording in a house on the Antrim coast, not far from where I grew up. Inside, a young mother and her newborn daughter were living through the first months of the COVID lockdown. The child had been born one night right there in that house, at the start of the pandemic, when even a midwife couldnt reach them. In the months that followed they were isolated together, looking out at the world from this strange, suspended place, a new life beginning just as the outside world came to a halt. I built the piece around those recordings, the voices, the room, the atmosphere. I wanted the music to hold that feeling of intimacy and strength, to capture something of how sacred, precious and safe those early days of home can be.”

Home Il: six month period in 2022, Rory spent time with the residents of care home. During these visits he collected hours of audio recordings, conversations and interactions with the people whose lives share the space; the residents, the staff, the visitors. It was these recordings that formed a scrapbook of sounds on which Rory composed a score for string quartet, piano and guitar. An attempt to collaborate with new friendships made, their past and their future.
